Celebrate Earth Day with a Turtle Nesting Beach Clean up
Register online at WaterWarriorAlliance.org.
Please join us as we celebrate Earth Day by cleaning up a turtle nesting area. The event will start at 10 am, on April 22, 2023, at Redington Shores Beach Access, 18200 Sunset Blvd, Redington Shores, FL 33708.
In conjunction with the event, Duke Energy is installing amber lighting on Redington Beach, North Redington Beach, and Redington Shores to deter the nesting turtles from the street lights that they often mistake for the moon. The amber lighting will also make it easier for the turtles to find their nests.
The event, hosted by Water Warrior Alliance, will feature a raffle; Jenna Byrne, president of the Water Warrior Alliance, said they expect a remarkable turnout but can always use more volunteers to help prepare the beach for nesting season.
The cleanup event will begin with guest speakers, including the City of Redington Beach, North Redington Beach, and Redington Shores Mayors. Next, a representative from Duke Energy will detail the turtle lighting plan, which will instantly positively affect turtle nesting on Redington Beach, North Redington Beach, and Redington Shores. To conclude the event, Water Warriors will clean-up the beach. Supplies and parking passes provided by Keep Pinellas Beautiful.
We will also hear from Yvette Fernandez, Senior Biologist with the Sea Turtle Conservation Program at Clearwater Marine Aquarium. In addition, volunteers will be stationed near the nests to share additional facts about the turtles, their habitat, and how we can best ensure their success as a species.
Please join us to learn, listen and clean up the beach for Redington Beach, North Redington Beach, and Redington Shores. Sponsorship opportunities are available.
Let us work together to celebrate Earth Day 2023!
