Flooding is the most common and costly natural disaster in the United States. Unfortunately, not everyone is aware of their flood risk and how to prepare for a flood. Protecting your property from flooding can involve a variety of actions:
- Review your current insurance policies to see if coverage is provided for flood damage to your home and its contents. Most homeowners insurance does not cover flood damage, so be sure to purchase flood insurance to cover both your property and contents.
- Elevate your equipment, such as water heaters, AC units, etc.
- Raise switches, sockets, circuit breakers and wiring
- Implement flood-proofing techniques.
- Install sewer backflow valves
- Build with flood resistant materials
- Clear storm drains
- Elevate your home

Only Rain Down the Drain
When storm drains get clogged with leaves, mulch, trash, and debris, water can no longer be drained from the street. Water ponds along streets and can flood intersections and homes.
- Clear storm drains to prevent flooding.
- Keep debris and trash out of the streets and drainage system.
There are numerous Stormwater inlets on public and private properties in town. The Public Works Department inspects these inlets on a biannual basis to determine if they are being maintained. It is illegal to dump anything into any storm drain or waterway. It is also illegal to leave your pet’s waste on the ground. The town of Redington Shores enforces these rules and violators are fined. If you see anyone dumping trash, lawn clippings, etc. into these inlets, contact the building department. If seen at night or weekends contact the police department at (727) 595-5414.
