January 1, 2026

As the new year begins, we’re reminding residents and visitors that safe driving saves lives. Our focus is simple: safer roads, safer communities, and preventing crashes before they happen.”
— Chief Lee Ann Holroyd

🚨 Traffic Safety Focus | FDOT ELEE Partnership

With increased seasonal traffic, the Indian Shores Police Department is working in partnership with the Florida Department of Transportation through the Enhanced Law Enforcement Engagement (ELEE) program to reduce crashes and improve roadway safety.

Early 2026 focus areas include:

  • Speeding on Gulf Boulevard
  • Failure to yield at marked crosswalks
  • Distracted driving near beach accesses
  • Pedestrian and cyclist safety in high-traffic areas
  • Enforcement in residential backstreets and neighborhood roads

The goal is prevention through visibility, education, and targeted enforcement.

👮 What You’ll See More Of

  • High-visibility traffic enforcement in coordination with FDOT
  • Increased patrols during peak beach, pedestrian, and event hours
  • Focused presence at intersections and pedestrian safety zones

You may notice patrol vehicles positioned with emergency lights activated and no traffic stop underway.  This visibility is intentional and proven to improve driver behavior.

🎯 Safety Message of the Week

Slow down in transition zones – Areas where traffic conditions change quickly, such as near beach accesses, crosswalks, and where Gulf Boulevard meets residential backstreets, and slowing down in these areas helps prevent crashes and close calls.

🚶 Pedestrians, Bicycles & Golf Carts

With higher pedestrian activity:

  • Drivers should anticipate pedestrians at all marked crosswalks
  • Pedestrians are encouraged to make eye contact before crossing
  • Cyclists should ride predictably and remain visible
  • Golf cart operators must follow posted roadway regulations

Safe roads require shared responsibility.

🏘️ Community Safety Reminders

Traffic safety works best alongside everyday prevention:

  • Always lock vehicles
  • Avoid leaving valuables in plain view
  • Report suspicious activity promptly to the police department

Early reporting helps prevent larger issues.

📣 Community Feedback Encouraged

If there is an intersection, crosswalk, or roadway that consistently feels unsafe, we encourage residents and visitors to share that information.  Community input helps guide enforcement, education, and engineering efforts.
