Below is an overview of each referendum question addressing the Charter item to be revised if that question is approved:
Referendum Question 1
COMMISSIONERS TERM OF OFFICE
Charter Section 5 of the Town Charter is called “Creation of Board of Commissioners,” and currently provides that the term of office for a Commissioner is two years. The referendum question asks residents whether they want to extend the terms from two years to three years.
If approved, commencing with the general election in November 2027, Commissioners elected from Districts 2 and 4 shall serve three-year terms, and commencing with the general election in November 2028, Commissioners elected from Districts 1 and 3 shall serve three-year terms.
Referendum Question 2
MAYORAL 2027 TERM OF OFFICE
Charter section 5 currently provides that the term of office for the Mayor-Commissioner is three years. The Mayor-Commissioner term of office is staggered to alternate with the election cycle of the Commissioners. The referendum question asks residents that if Referendum Question #1 passes extending the term of office for a Commissioner to three years, should the Charter be amended to provide the term of office for the Mayor-Commissioner, following the November 2027 general election, only be two years. The one-time two-year term would maintain the staggered terms of office for the Mayor-Commissioner and Commissioners.
If approved, commencing with the general election in November 2027, the Mayor-Commissioner would serve a two-year term. For the following general election in November 2029, the term of office of the Mayor-Commissioner shall be for a period of three years.
